As a blow in to this part of the world, I find pretty much everything about summer in the Sperrins simply stunning (omg, that’s the best alliteration!). I’ve lived in Gortin for 9 years now and I love everything about this place, but especially the abundant beauty this area offers. When I first moved here, Gortin didn’t quite have as much abundance of activity but it always had an appeal. I was awed by it when I first arrived and now I love to hear visitors awed by it when they first see it as well. Gortin and the surrounding area of the Sperrins is well worth a visit. With all there is to do, you could spend days exploring, eating, and soaking up the beauty that this area has to offer- here are some of my summer suggestions.
Lake Adventures
The Gortin Lakes are a set of lakes situated just before your arrival into the village. You can walk the gravel paths and enjoy the serene setting the lakes have to offer, or you could challenge yourself to an adventure! The lakes are a great place to go for a dip and swimmers can be found here throughout the year. Follow Donna @offgridadventures who hosts paddleboarding experiences on the water to see what fun you could get up to! If taking a dip in the lake feels too intimidating, you could head on over to The Sauna Shack. This little sauna situated in the Glens is a one of a kind experience. Take a dip in the river, or drench yourself with a bucket of cold water, then relax in the sauna. Heaven!

Forest Walks
The Gortin Glens are a nature lover’s paradise and offer a wide range of walks and opportunities to bathe in the beauty of the forest. There are six trails to choose from, so you can take a more leisurely stroll, or you can climb to Mullaghcairn where Darrach the Giant stands watch. On a clear day the views are incredible! On a rainy day it feels mystical and magical (don’t sue me, Benson).

Stay at An Doras Bui
For a one of a kind experience, treat yourself to a stay at An Doras Bui. Guests are repeatedly blown away by the stunning views, especially from the hot tub. With no neighbours within close proximity, our spot offers the best privacy to enjoy your stay. The hut’s cosy and quirky interior makes it the perfect place to experience the unparalleled peace of the countryside. Summer isn’t complete without a BBQ, so take advantage of ours and cook up a feast. Light a fire in the firepit and then relax in the covered hot tub with a view that’s hard to beat. It’s the perfect space whether you’re wanting a romantic getaway, a girls night in, or a solo adventure.

A Food Lover’s Paradise
If finding new cafes and eating delicious food is your thing- Gortin has got you. For coffee, lunch, and the most dangerously delicious traybakes, stop in to The Auld Bank. I love the beautiful, relaxed vibe inside. If you’re taking a walk through the Gortin Glens you could grab a coffee and a treat from Brie’s Barista as a reward for your steps! For hearty breakfast and lunch options, head over to Mossey’s on Main Street to fuel up for your adventures. Bistrosixteen, Gortin’s local restaurant, has a menu that ranges from share boxes and messy fries to mains like curry or rib-eye. I’m planning my next order as I write! A little further afield in Omagh, there’s a wealth of coffee with some of my favorites being The Alchemist and Hagan Coffee Bar, and my favorite food stops include Serendipity or The Kitchen for lunch or Grant’s for dinner.

Walks Galore
One of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of Gortin and the Sperrins is to get out and walk in it. I fell in love with the Sperrins on foot- the peace and the beauty, the chance to spot some wildlife, or marvel over the abundant plant life…I just can’t get enough of it. An evening stroll around the countryside roads of An Doras Bui is a must. For a really fun treat, book in with Sperrin Alpacas (a stone’s throw from us), and enjoy some alpaca company and a wealth of knowledge about foraging from owner Siobhan. Keep an eye out for the Sperrin’s Walking Festival as well for guided group walks.

Ice Cream!
It wouldn’t be summer without indulging in an ice cream 5-7 days a week, right? Dukes Ice Cream is home to happy cows and therefore delicious ice cream. Drive through their farm and enjoy the animal sightings to get to their honesty shop where you can sit and enjoy your ice cream inside or out. For a good old fashioned 99 on a hot day, the McKeown’s Day Today will take care of you!

Hopefully you’ve gotten a sense of my love for Gortin, the Sperrins, and all they have to offer. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well here making it a place full of really fun, beautiful and exciting opportunities- I can’t wait for you to experience it yourself!
